What Handov is
Handov is a UK education support service delivered by phone. A prisoner with our number on their approved PIN phone list can call +44 (0)1473 943 220 and speak with an automated study assistant — to work through courses, practise reading and writing, research release planning, and get general education support.
No devices, no internet, no apps, and no installation are required. The service works on the PIN phone system prisoners already use.
Security surface — five key facts
One-way and automated. The caller can only ever speak to our system. There is no way to reach, contact, or pass a message to any other person — inside or outside the prison.
No outbound or incoming calls. The service cannot make outbound calls on a caller's behalf and cannot receive calls — it cannot be used to contact a prisoner or to trigger a call to any person.
No voicemail, forwarding, three-way calling, or bridging. The number terminates at a fixed automated service. A caller cannot be connected to any other number or person through Handov.
Recorded by your provider as normal. All calls are recorded and monitored by the establishment's phone provider under existing prison rules, exactly like any other approved outgoing call. Handov adds no private channel.
Standard geographic rate. Calls are charged at the standard geographic rate — the same as any 01 or 02 landline. No premium-rate element, no revenue-share on call costs.
Prohibited-subject policy
The assistant is instructed to refuse requests related to escape, violence, weapons, illegal drugs, gang activity, and any other content that facilitates criminal conduct. Refusals are calm and brief, and redirect the caller to permitted topics — education, study, release planning, reading and writing practice.

Report a problem
If there is ever a problem or concern with a user's account — or any other concern about the service — report it as a problem, clearly labelled "Prison issue", and include a contact we can reach you on. We will rectify the issue or suspend the account within 12–24 hours.
